Celebrating Our Cancer Survivors: Meet Fawn

At age 41 in 2022, Fawn was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). She underwent a mastectomy. It was then discovered that she also had DCIS so was dealing with two different types of cancers. Fawn was fortunate to not need chemotherapy or radiation. However, her journey was anything but easy and she faced multiple infections, 3 emergency surgeries, and extended hospital stays. We asked her to share what it means to be a survivor and some of her learnings.
Regaining My Life
I am now in remission. It has been two and a half years, and I can finally get back to things I love. For me, my happy place is on the water and boating.
Obstacles Faced
I thought I was lucky to not need chemotherapy and radiation. But I did not realize how many problems I would face. I wish I knew some of the potential complications.
My Care Team
If it weren’t for my exceptional care team. I would not have made it through this mentally. I am grateful to my breast surgeon, my plastic surgeon, my oncologist, and the ECHO team.
Why I Love ECHO
I had my first consultation elsewhere. I felt uncomfortable, confused, and overwhelmed. I walked out more upset and confused. I has a second consultation at ECHO and met with Dr. Johnson. She explained everything so well, gave me many different options, and was so understanding. It was completely different experience. I felt like I was being care for as a person – not as a number or just another cancer patient. Everyone is always so kind at ECHO. They are willing to listen, answer questions, and don’t overwhelm me with medical jargon.
What Helped Me through My Experience
I was fortunate to have a wonderful support team with my husband and friends. My friends kept me involved in their group chats and even if I couldn’t participate, I was grateful to be included.
My Role as a Survivor
I am very willing to share my story and talk with anyone who needs guidance. I wish I understood potential challenges and am happy to talk with women who want to hear about my experience.
Words of Advice
Every journey is different. Yet, there are so many challenges that are the same regardless of your path. Know that there are many options out there.
