Meet Our New Nurse Practitioner: Heather Meller, DNP, APN-C
This summer, we were excited to welcome Heather Meller, DNP, APN-C to the ECHO team. Heather provides care for patients in both our office and hospital settings, bringing decades of oncology experience and a deep commitment to compassionate, collaborative care.
We sat down with Heather to learn more about her background, what inspired her career in oncology, and what she enjoys outside of work.
Tell us about your education and training.
I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rutgers University before continuing my education at Columbia University, where I completed a Master’s degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Oncology. My passion for oncology and lifelong learning led me to pursue additional training, including a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner degree from Columbia University.
As my career evolved, I found myself caring for oncology patients of all ages. To better serve adult patients, I earned an Adult Nurse Practitioner degree from Felician University. Most recently, I completed my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at Rutgers University.
What sparked your interest in oncology?
I have always been drawn to oncology. My first nursing position was in medical oncology and transplant, where I was fortunate to have an outstanding mentor who encouraged me early in my career to pursue advanced education as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Oncology.
Later, I became an IV chemotherapy infusion nurse, which gave me the opportunity to care for patients with many different types of cancer and to learn about a wide range of treatments. Those experiences reinforced my passion for oncology and the meaningful relationships that develop with patients and their families.
What motivated you to continue your training?
As my career progressed, I wanted to take on a more hands-on role in diagnosing, treating, and managing patient care. Becoming an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) allowed me to do that, and it has been one of the best decisions of my career.
I truly enjoy partnering with patients and their families while collaborating with physicians, nurses, and the entire healthcare team to provide the highest quality care.
What attracted you to ECHO?
A colleague recommended ECHO to me, and after learning more about the practice, I was impressed by its patient-centered philosophy and collaborative approach to care.
ECHO’s multidisciplinary team shares my belief that the best outcomes are achieved when healthcare professionals work together to support patients and their families throughout their cancer journey.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
When I’m not caring for patients, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, walking my two dogs, trying new recipes in the kitchen, gardening, and enjoying the fruits of my labor. I also love taking walks along the beach whenever I have the chance.
