Meet Wendy Garvin Mayo, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC

This July, we are excited to welcome Wendy Garvin Mayo, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC, to the ECHO team. Wendy is an experienced nurse practitioner with more than 15 years of oncology experience, bringing a wealth of clinical expertise and a passion for supporting both patients and healthcare professionals. We asked Wendy to share a little about herself.

Tell us about your background and training.

I began my career as a clinical nurse before earning my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in 2010. Throughout my career, I have cared for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with much of my experience focused on oncology. Working alongside patients throughout their cancer journey has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

What are your areas of clinical interest?

I am especially passionate about the mental health and emotional well-being of the oncology community. Throughout my career, I have supported patients, cancer survivors, and caregivers by helping them navigate the emotional challenges that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. Providing compassionate guidance and support is an important part of the care I strive to deliver.

You have also made a significant impact on the nursing community. Can you tell us about that work?

Nurse wellness is something I care deeply about. I founded the Connecticut Nurse Wellness Project, the state’s first comprehensive nurse wellness initiative. Alongside an outstanding advisory board, we are working to build a healthier, more sustainable nursing workforce across Connecticut.

Using feedback from hundreds of nurses throughout the state, we are identifying opportunities to improve the systems, workplace environments, and leadership practices that influence nurse well-being. We are also proud to host Connecticut’s first-ever Nurse Wellness, Mental Health & Well-Being Day on August 8.

What will your role at ECHO include?

As one of ECHO’s advanced practice providers, I will partner closely with our physicians to care for patients before, during, and after treatment. My responsibilities include assessing patients, educating them about their treatment plans, managing treatment-related side effects, answering questions, and helping ensure they receive comprehensive, compassionate care throughout their cancer journey.

What attracted you to ECHO?

I was drawn to ECHO because it is a thriving independent oncology practice that truly puts patients first. The close collaboration between physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and staff creates an environment where patients receive highly personalized care. I appreciate the strong communication and team-based approach, and I am excited to be part of an organization that is so committed to exceptional patient care.
